Credit for Prior Learning Policy

Purpose:

This policy defines Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) opportunities for students admitted to Winona State University (WSU).

Policy:

A. Opportunities

WSU provides current, comprehensive, and accessible information on credit for prior learning opportunities to prospective and admitted students as part of degree planning and advising. Enrolled students may demonstrate college- and university-level learning that applies to their courses, programs, or degree requirements. Credit for prior learning opportunities include CPL – External Assessments, CPL – Internal Assessments, and/or military courses and military occupations.

B. Awarding Credit

WSU determines the amount of credit awarded to students who demonstrate prior learning at the college or university level that is equivalent to one or more courses in the WSU course catalog. WSU also awards credit to students who demonstrate prior learning at the college or university level that is individualized or interdisciplinary. Credits awarded for prior learning may fulfill general, Minnesota Transfer Curriculum (MnTC), major/minor requirements, and/or elective courses.

C. College and University Transfer

WSU accepts credits for prior learning awarded by another college or university in transfer in accordance with System Procedure 3.21.1 (Undergraduate Course Credit Transfer). There are currently no System Policies or Procedures related to Graduate Credit Transfer.

D. Appeals

Students may appeal credit for prior learning assessment decisions. Appeals will follow the WSU Academic Integrity Policy as published on the WSU website.
